_Before her brother Eddie joined the Marine Corps, Summer Tissue thought deployed troops were given all the supplies they would need to make it through their
time spent overseas. She quickly discovered that this was not the case,
finding out that soldiers must use their paychecks for many necessary items;
the only thing guaranteed to them was ammunition and weapons.

Summer decided to help by starting Military Connections,
a non-profit organization that ships packages to troops overseas.

“I started shipping items to my brother and his friends so that they did not have to
spend their paychecks on items needed for deployment,” she said. “Word soon
spread and marines were writing me letters and asking for items such as toothpaste, soap, and socks. The PX where they purchase the items in Iraq was not getting
enough supplies in and the troops had no way of purchasing supplies.“

Summer determined that, if her brother and his friends were in need, other men and women must be in the same position. The rest, as she says, is history.

Military Connections ships all types of items, primarily focusing on things such as food, snacks, healthcare items, athletic socks, magazines and entertainment items
such as compact discs or magazines.  The organization encourages requests
from the troops, leading to other shipments like helmet liners, bulletproof plates for their vests, combat boots, air conditioner units, sporting equipment, pillows,
DVD players, televisions and many other needed supplies.

“I have never declined a request from a unit and will ship anything that I possibly
can to make their deployment as enjoyable as possible,” Summer said.

The group’s largest fund-raiser is the Christmas Adoption Project, where
thousands of stockings are stuffed and sent to men and women overseas.
Summer said the program is a great morale booster.
